Learn the Pan Flute with Brad White

Learning to play the panflute has been one of the biggest joys in my musical life

Though I have played many instruments in my career, once I found the pan-flute it just sort of took me over.

I love all of my different flutes, but the pan-flute just has that magical expressive sound that is so captivating.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Diane Bish Show an Interview with Zamfir

Diane Bish Show an Interview with Zamfir one of the Panflute worlds most famous players with countless albums and performances all over the world. In this interview he explains about the Panflute and some of the techniques used in playing it. Very good interview for students to watch

The Story of Yu Xun-FaI

In 1978 Mr. Yu and his orchestra was touring the US in a special concert series. He heard of a young student who wanted to attend his concerts but could not afford the ticket price.

He went out of his way to make arrangements for that student to receive tickets for all of his concerts. The young student was moved to tears by this generosity. Later they stayed in touch by mail. In 1981 the student and her new husband visited Shanghai and Mr. Yu.

She told him that she had one requirement of her new husband, he must speak Chinese. Why? Because in China there is a good friend and she must visit that friend someday. After the short visit Mr. Yu was so touched by their friendship that he wrote this song, 'Missing you in a distant place'.

Cornel Pana

Cornel Pana explains and performs the Romanian Doina. In an interview I did with Cornell in Ireland when we were visiting a mutual friend about 25 years ago.

Ulrich Herkenhoff

Dear Brad,

Here I play in Switzerland in the garden of Marcel Cellier, who was the founder of G. Zamfir and the idea of panflute and organ, the Doina from Fanica Luca on the Flute of Fanica Luca. Fanica gave that flute as gift to Marcel, before he died in 1968.

I posted this little film specially for you. If you like, you can publish it to your website as a gift from me.

Kind regards and best wishes to you and Melinda,

Ulli

Note: Fanica Luca is considered the father of the modern panflute. See history section >

Ulrich Herkenhoff & Mihai Puscoiu

  • Filmed Panflute Day June 2002
  • Allegro by Cimarosa - Concerto for 2 flutes in G.

For many years I had wanted to attend a Panflute Day in Delft. Delft is a beautiful old town near the Hague in the Netherlands. I first visited Delft in the winter of 1996 to study panflute with Costel Puscoiu.

My wife and I both fell in love with the area, and the Puscoiu family. Young Mihai was then only 10 years old, but already he was able to play the most difficult repertoire with natural ease. It was then that I first heard an album of an incredible young panflutist from Germany, Ulrich Herkenhoff.

Over the years we have all become great friends. Finally, after all these years, I was in Delft at the right time to attend this very special 15th year Anniversary Panflute Day concert.

Paradise (1984), animated film with Gheorghe Zamfir;  panflute

In this short animation film, with music by George Zamfir, a magnificent bird performs for the Emperor inside a glittering palace. Its plumage is a blaze of colour. A blackbird, watching enviously, strives to acquire what he so desperately covets, only to discover that a golden cage can’t compete with the open skies.
